Nigeria and the need to overhaul our thinking process- Mental Rebuilding by Azuka Onwuka

A friend returned from Europe some years ago to Nigeria. Any time he wanted to see a friend or family member or visit a shop 1 to 3 kilometres away, he would dress up in his sportswear and sneakers and walk to the place. For him, it was a great way to exercise. But those who saw him a number of times walking called his family members to tell him to stop disgracing the family, because walking around would make people conclude that he returned from Europe a poor man. Nigeria has a big problem of materialism and show-off. People are judged and rated based on their phone, outfit, car, house, trips to Europe/North America, where their children study, how much money they spray at events and what currency, etc. Nigerians salivate over the convoy of cars, money, power, etc which elected and appointed political office holders flaunt. Even though they know that much of it is proceed of corruption, they pray for their turn to come. Ironically, Nigerians fast and pray in churches and mosques t...

Facts and Myths(busted) of 1966 Coup in Nigeria- Never an Igbo Coup

“Chief Obafemi Awolowo was, for example, to be released from jail immediately and to be made the Executive President of Nigeria.”(See West Africa magazine of July 29, 1967, page 981). And here’s Major Adewale Ademoyega: “At the end of the first week of January, Major Anuforo and I arranged to meet Captain Udeaja, a young engineering graduate from the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, UK. We met in Major Chukwuka’s house at the Ikeja Cantonment but Chukwuka himself was not there. Having briefed Udeaja generally and got his consent, we gave him his task. “He was to fly a special plane provided for the purpose to Calabar on the morning of D-Day, to effect the release of Chief Awolowo and bring him to Lagos on the plane. We had already arranged for a plane of the Nigeria Air Force to be made available that morning. “This was done through Major Nzegwu (not Nzeogwu) of the Air Force.” (See Adewale Ademoyega: Why We Struck: The Story of the First Nigerian Coup, Evans Brothers ...

95% of the dysfunctional thinking of the masses influences the attitude of Africa's politics

I have been pondering, with 95% of the general masses running on trifurcated thinking(Africans culture/Western-Arabian Religion/struggling to understand western civilisation) which has left them confused. How then would they understand rational and pragmatic thinking proposed by Peter Obi and the likes, in cleaning up the governance space. 95% of the dysfunctional thinking influences the attitude of our politics, therefore Nigeria will continue to deteriorate to anarchy just as we are currently experiencing.

Listening is an essential skill for a healthy marriage By Elizabeth Badejo

Even though communication is an essential tool in marriage, it can only be effective when a couple is able to practice the act of listening to one another. This may sound easy but often impossible to accomplish making conflict resolution difficult in many marriages. In some cultures, the husband is responsible for making the decisions while the wife is accustomed to listening and taking instructions without expressing her own opinion which can lead to cohesive control making the woman feel threatened in her own marriage. Perhaps your marriage is struggling today because your spouse lacks listening skill, and you try your best to stay calm to avoid conflict. Break the barrier In a healthy relationship, both parties must be willing to practice the act of listening to each other and this is often a barrier even from the courtship period. Some spouses take this for granted and make a connection to their partner’s character to justify the bad habit which can lead to emotional abuse and b...

If only you can wait by Fola Ojo

One of the most discouraging and spirit-weakening experiences in the lives of humans is a waiting period. Waiting to satisfy a hunger, quench a thirst and have a promise fulfilled is not always pleasant. The season can be painful and stressful. You may have worked on a job for years and yet the due promotion is not coming. You may have wasted so much money trying to relocate from your present abode and travel abroad and yet the visa isn’t coming. You may have been married for a long time and the baby is not coming. Maybe you are a young woman, and you have been expecting to start your own family but no man is asking for your hands in marriage. You are gifted in your craft but it seems that the gift is not making a way for you. You have the business acumen and are very savvy about buying and selling but have no funds to start. You are a preacher who carries the anointing but there is no prominent platform for you to be heard. You may have also invested all your life in politics and gove...

Communication conquers feeling of disappointment By Elizabeth Badejo

Valentine’s Day has come and gone leaving many people with mixed feelings, for some couples. It was the most amazing celebration together exchanging lovely gifts, romantic dinner, and a cozy night in each other’s arms. For some other couples, Valentine’s Day was like every other day which could have been different if one or both made the extra effort to communicate their feelings before the day. The truth is that many couples fall out after Valentine’s Day due to undue pressure of expectations and complete disappointments from lack of fulfillment. Perhaps one begins to wonder why this single day in a year can be so sentimental and significant enough to wreck relationships and vows meant to stand the test of time. Validate your feelings Valentine’s Day often sends the wrong impression of love in many ways due to the social media campaigns to commercialise the day which many also believe has devalued the key purposes of true love. It is not unusual to feel unhappy and resentful after Val...
