Nigeria and the need to overhaul our thinking process- Mental Rebuilding by Azuka Onwuka

A friend returned from Europe some years ago to Nigeria. Any time he wanted to see a friend or family member or visit a shop 1 to 3 kilometres away, he would dress up in his sportswear and sneakers and walk to the place. For him, it was a great way to exercise. But those who saw him a number of times walking called his family members to tell him to stop disgracing the family, because walking around would make people conclude that he returned from Europe a poor man. Nigeria has a big problem of materialism and show-off. People are judged and rated based on their phone, outfit, car, house, trips to Europe/North America, where their children study, how much money they spray at events and what currency, etc. Nigerians salivate over the convoy of cars, money, power, etc which elected and appointed political office holders flaunt. Even though they know that much of it is proceed of corruption, they pray for their turn to come. Ironically, Nigerians fast and pray in churches and mosques that the country will miraculously turn around and become like Western countries. It is a ridiculous contradiction!
