Marriage is an act of service by Elizabeth Badejo
There is a general perception affirming that money is a huge contributor to most failing and broken marriages today and many couples will agree. However, many marriages have also failed due to one person’s lack of interest and ability to serve the other even in desperate situations. Several simple factors are key to building a successful and fulfilling marriage and they also form the basis by which couples are required to grow together and meet each other’s needs.
Serving is selfless
Serving your spouse is a selfless act that brings greater accomplishments and a huge sense of humility into your marriage. Serving your partner also means that you can strike the right balance between understanding your own struggles and being considerate of your partner’s weaknesses too. Serving is understanding your partner’s present situation and his/her capacity to cope and showing compassion while offering her the necessary support too. An act of selfless service is waiting patiently for the right time for your wife to share her feelings with you while you pay attention to the details and reassure her afterwards.
Serving is kindness
Marriage is a partnership and kindness is one of the greatest acts of service to humanity which must start from your marriage. Sometimes life will be cruel and unkind but when you have a spouse who treats you with kindness and makes you feel comfortable and loved, your home will always be your haven. It is okay not to be okay in a marriage and this is where kindness plays an important role and is not judgemental. Serving each other allows you to express your feelings and emotions. It is okay to cry if crying is your own way of letting your feelings out or criticising each other which is important in building a healthy relationship.
Serving is a sacrifice
One of the problems facing many marriages today to the lack of service as some couples still believe that marriage is fifty-fifty which means that each person will only be required to give half of themselves to their marriage which can be unrealistic in practice. Serving each other from the start will encourage you to focus on the needs of your marriage and not on what each person has done for the marriage. It can also breed respect on a common ground to share your opinions and make decisions that affect your marriage and family too. A healthy marriage is not based on ratio but on the true love of servicing, sacrificing, and supporting each other come rain or shine.
Serving is infinite
The thought of living alone when you are old and grey with a partner who is selfish and uncaring at present can be an unpleasant feeling and a scary one too knowing that you will need to depend on each other for support one day. When you have cultivated the act of serving each other from the beginning, the will to live long and enjoy life together becomes more significant knowing that someone cares about you and will always have your back in sicknesses and in health. This affirmation of service can boost your physical and emotional health, well-being, and happiness too and it is never too late to start having these uncomfortable conversations as a couple.
